2023-2024 Program

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2023
YALE INSTITUTE OF SACRED MUSIC
409 Prospect St., New Haven, Connecticut
7 – 9 p.m.

Marquand Chapel’s Taylor and Boody organ, RSV classroom, and Pasi studio organ

“The Physics of Harmony and keyboard tuning and temperaments”

A class given by retired physics teacher and organist Bill Degan, with help from some Yale students and two beautiful pipe organs tuned in unequal temperaments:  one in quarter-comma meantone and the other in the circulating well temperament Kellner.   Why are there different tuning systems for keyboards (temperaments), and how do they differ from equal temperament so prevalent today?  Can I hear the differences?  What does it sound like to play early music on these temperaments?

But in the first hour, let’s define pure harmony, and explore it from a physics and mathematics standpoint.  Although there will be some physics and math, there is no “pre-requisite” for this class.

Please meet in the chapel, to have a look at the Taylor and Boody organ first.
